Ladysmith Black Mambazo is the South African vocal music group that first made Mbube music famous. Traditionally performed a cappella, in Mbube music, the voices sing in rhythmic unison creating intricate harmonies and textures.
In their early years, Apartheid kept the group from entering competitions. But it didn’t keep them from singing, nor from garnering fans captivated by their vocal gifts and their signature sound, a blend of South African rhythms and harmonies.
In addition to being Grammy award-winning artists, former South African President and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Nelson Mandela designated the group as “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World.”
An apt label for a group who broke down numerous barriers to become a South African super-group.
