The word Gullah is derived from a West African term for “a people blessed by God.” It refers to not only the people, but the culture and music of the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Native South Carolinians, Ranky Tanky (loosely translated as “Work it!” or “Get funky!”), bring to life the soulful songs of the Gullah culture, melding them with elements of jazz, gospel, funk, and R&B. Their breakout performance in 2017 on NPR’s Fresh Air is a must hear. With songs ranging from exhilarating to soulful, from dance songs to lullabies, this group expertly captures Gullah tradition and music.
