Did you know…

RFK: The Journey to Justice chronicles Robert F. Kennedy’s transformation from discomfort with and indifference towards the Civil Rights Movement to a champion and crusader. His story provides a compelling and dramatic illumination of this crucial decade, enabling a new generation to hear the words, feel the tension, and explore the issues that still resonate today.

The relationship between Robert F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the Civil Rights Movement was complicated. Despite beginnings anchored in mistrust, the relationship ultimately evolved as RFK’s voice became an important force in the fight for civil rights.

In this L.A. Theatre Works’ new docudrama, the challenges, victories, and defeats of that period are refracted through RFK’s experiences. Biographer of the authoritative work on John F. Kennedy, President Kennedy: Profile of Power, his experience and research will provide historical perspective and context.

Under the leadership of Producing Director, Susan Albert Loewenberg, L.A. Theatre Works (LATW) has been the foremost radio theater company in the United States for two decades. Broadcast in America on NPR and XM Satellite Radio, internationally on the BBC, CBC, Voice of America and many other English language networks, LATW has single-handedly brought the finest recorded dramatic literature into the homes of millions.

The performance was compelling and enhanced my memories of that time, as well as recalling my own experiences in that decade and beyond. I was particularly impressed with the portrayal of RFK’s motivations for involvement in the civil rights movement. The performance portrayed so well the arc of his growth from pragmatic political use of the movement to gain black votes to a moral commitment to act in the name of justice.

  2. June and H. D. Girard says:

My husband and I agreed this was one of the BEST performances we have seen at the Phillips. We were disapointed with the small audience and thought that the entire balcony should have been offered free to University students of History, Political Science and Law. Many do not know how we got to where we are today. Anyway, Thank You for bringing the event and perhaps, with more audience directed public relations - like speaking with the Heads of the above departments and the Professors to encourage attendance. Anyway, Thank You

  3. Paul Doughty says:

I thought that this was an innovative and moving performance that skillfully took us through one of the most dramatic decades in recent political history. For those of us who lived through this time it brought back vivid memories and we wished, and indeed wanted, to have a large audience sharing the experience. For younger people unknowing of those times and the socio-political nuances portrayed by the personages represented, it would have been a unique and important learning experience. The “play” in short, was excellent. Kudos for the actors and to the Performing Arts Center for bringing it to us.

  4. Josh and Sally Dickinson says:

We had never seen this group perform before and thought their delivery was stunning. The thoughts of other attendees, above, reflect our own - and the idea for sharing tickets with students might equally well extend to high school. Those who were there were clearly involved, as the story unfolded and they reacted. Thank you for introducing us to their talented performance.
