Sister Hazel originated in Gainesville, Florida in 1994. The name Sister hazel was inspired by Sister Hazel Williams, an African-American woman who ran Sister Hazel’s Rescue Mission in Gainesville during the 1970s and early ’80s. This facility gave those who were down on their luck a safe place to stay warm, eat and regroup, regardless of age, race or beliefs.
Sister Hazel fans are referred to as “Hazelnuts.”
The song Where Do You Go was featured on an episode of Scrubs (season 6, episode 4).
The band has had music featured in several movies and soundtracks including Major League: Back to the Minors, The Wedding Planner, Clay Pigeons, Bedazzled, American Wedding, and 10 Things I Hate About You.

Went to Sister Hazel with some out of town guests. Explaining why you can’t take a drink to your seat was not that bad, but when you ran out of beer and wine before Sister Hazel came on; I couldn’t explain. This was the only time in my life that I was embarrassed to be a Gator. Makes me not want to visit your venue. When I told people I work with today about you running out of beer and wine no one believed it. What a service failure. At $5 and $6 per drink, you lost a lot of revenue.

GREAT show! I thoroughly enjoyed it! It was a treat to have Stan Lynch show up unexpectedly for a few numbers. And then Aslyn- what a fabulous young new talent! She has a great voice, and boy can she play the piano! Good job, Michael B.!

The audience and band were highly engerzied. Was good to see all the different ages. I enjoyed the idea of family and friends being there as well. This is what Gainesville is all about. Sometimes very loud and hard to understand the words (I knew most). Keep them on the schedule for next year.

I had not anticipated that I would be dancing in the aisles but I was totally energized by the performance. The warm-up act was outstanding as well. Undoubtedly, the home-town crowd would welcome a repeat show in an upcoming season.

What a great band that seems to appeal to all ages!Thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Aslyn was a perfect choice to open the show. Hope to see them both again at the Phillips Center.

This concert represents an exemplary community event. The attendees not only were fans of Sister Hazel, but also extremely proud of their roots. We need more “feel good” events like this.
Thanks, Dr. Blachly

It was great to see Sister Hazel on their home turf again. It was obvious they were having a good time and the show reflected that. Aslyn was a very pleasant surprise. I’d pay to see her again in a smaller venue. One complaint–the number of LCD screens (cameras and phones) visible during the show was very distracting.

Thank you for your email in regards to the issues surrounding the lack of concessions at the intermission of Sister Hazel on Friday evening. Please be assured that we are equally as disappointed in the service as our guests. The catering is provided through the University by Classic Fare, who was made aware of the high volume of attendees, and yet was unprepared with appropriate stock. Our Director, Michael Blachly, is in communication with the Vice President for Administrative Affairs who oversees catering on campus, to determine what caused the situation on Friday evening.
Please know that the lack of concessions during Sister Hazel was of great concern to us, and something we are working to resolve to ensure does not happen in the future. We hope to see you at future events, as our standards of operation are much greater than what occurred Friday evening.
Again, thank you for expressing your concern, as it allows us to improve upon our services in the future.

My family and I very much enjoyed the evening. Look forward having future similar events. The mix of vocals and music needs to be reviewed. A lot of the vocals in both acts (especially with Aslyn) were lost to us due to dominance of music mix.

The concert was outstanding. The only distraction during the show was the 4 young women in front of us who wanted to stand the entire time. They finally moved down to the front when Sister Hazel started playing “A Little Like Heaven” and then jammed with Stan Lynch. The girls never came back to their seats and we were able to enjoy the rest of the show.
This is not the first Sister Hazel show where you all have run out of beer and wine. It happened the last time as well. Possibly this crowd drinks more than most of your other shows, but surely this must have been in someone’s notes from before.
Keep bringing Sister Hazel back, I look forward to it every year!!
