Did you know…

  • noche-flamenca.jpgNoche Flamenca was founded in Madrid in 1993 by artistic director Martín Santangelo and his wife (lead dancer) Soledad Barrio.
  • Soledad has won awards from over 12 different countries around the globe for her excellence in dance.
  • Noche Flamenca’s goal since its inception has been to maintain the essence, purity and integrity of one of the world’s most complex and mysterious art forms without the use of tricks or gimmicks.
  • All aspects of flamenco; dance, song, and music, are interrelated and given equal weight in the presentations of Noche Flamenca, creating a true communal spirit within the company - the very heart and soul of flamenco.
  • The flamenco exists in three forms: el cante (the song), el baile (the dance), and la guitarra (the guitar playing). Gypsies are often credited with the “invention” of flamenco, and it is at least certain that they played an important part in its creation. But the popular songs and dances of Andalusia also had a major influence on early Flamenco.

I had the good luck to see them at EPCOT in June. I hope they come back this fall for the Food and Wine Festival. My brother is a Flamenco fan and also happens to be a well known expert on John James Audobon would like to see them.

Fantastic–thank you! You should bring more Flamenco to Gainesville–it is a phenomenal art form. Let me know if you need some suggestions for other flamenco companies that I have heard over the years.

  3. C. Maeztu says:

I felt embarrassment at the amount of dust Soledad Barrios’ dress was kicking up particularly during the second number.

Can’t the stage be better cleaned for performances?

My comment? This was the worse performance I have been to in all my participations with Phillips. Mr. Santangelo is such a purist, that he left out the sales on country, and did not entertain us with a setting, scenery, color of costume or anything similar to what I experienced in southern Spain in 1960-61. Beside sticking to the pure sound of Flamenco of the 15th, 16th, and 17th century and the hardships of that time, he could have had a cafe setting, colorful costumes of Spain in the 19/20th centuries, and had full back drop visuals of Spain from artwork in the centuries he was trying to portray, and the beauty of Spain today. I brought a lady friend who loves theater but has never been to the Phillips Center in the twenty-five years she has lived in Gainesville. I wanted to make a good impression on her so she would love to continue performances at the Center. She thought it was awful. I met some other guests that who are influential members of the Alachua County school system and they were bored out of their minds as we spoke during the break. This was not a good experience.

One of the most passionate Flamenco performances I have ever seen! I highly recommend it to any Flamenco fans. Thanks UF Performing Arts!

  6. Eve Hope says:

Overall, very disappointing. I did not care for the wailing / improvisational style of singing. The dancers (no offense intended here) seemed to be past their performance peaks. I had taken my father for his 82nd birthday and we both completely agreed and left at intermission. What a disappointment!

  7. Marilyn Ridge says:

Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca was a marvelous performance! Thoroughly enjoyed as I have studied and dance Flamenco. The guitarist also was fantastic as were all the vocalists. Brought back fond memories of my travels in Spain.

  8. Geraldine Nichols says:

It was a superb “flamenco evening”, just as advertised. That is, it wasn’t just sheer commercial showmanship, but truly made an attempt to recreate the atmosphere that might be found in a more intimate setting somewhere in Spain, in a peña. I had my Spanish culture class attend, and they were thrilled with it. Kudos to the selection committee!

  9. Dolores says:

We went to Spain a few years ago. We have friends there. One of the places we were taken to in Madrid was to see the real flamenco.
This performance was like we had seen in Madrid.

Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca was a superb and incredible performance! I enjoyed all the different variations of Flamenco as portrayed in the show. The guitarist was fantastic as were all the vocalists. Brought back memories of my travels to different areas in Spain.
