Glamour. Romance. Musical Fantasyland…THE OPERA SHOW presents beautiful music exquisitely performed in a spectacular and exuberant 21st century showcase.
Broadway’s Tony Award-winning musical-comedy phenomenon takes you back to 1962 Baltimore, as 16-year-old Tracy Turnblad sets out to dance her way onto TV’s most popular show.
After an exciting debut at the Phillips Center in 2005 and a sold-out performance in 2006, the Soweto Gospel Choir returns to their “U.S. home” once again. The ensemble’s mix of tribal, traditional and popular African gospel makes for a moving, awe-inspiring and unforgettable evening for the entire family.

Did you know…
After forming in 1989, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones made their self-titled debut recording in 1990 by playing a “blu-bop” mix of jazz and bluegrass. Since then, they have become a commercially successful, critically-acclaimed and award-winning band.
At the 2008 GRAMMY Awards, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones won a GRAMMY for Best Pop Instrumental for their holiday album Jingle All The Way.
Jingle All The Way features everything from the sparkling banjo-harmonic arrangements of Christmas Time Is Here and River and a Tuvan-inspired, world beat performance of What Child Is This /Dyngyladai to fiery, virtuosic renditions of Sleigh Ride and Danse of the Sugar Plum Fairies and many more.

The best band in the world, period.

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are exceptional musicians! Their concert was extremely enjoyable and we were delighted to be introduced to the mesmerizing music of the Alash Ensemble as well. What a wonderful way to usher in the holiday season!

Incredible show. Stopped breathing during the Victor Wooten bass solo/medley.
Great venue. Only suggestion would be how to direct or control or route the line waiting to see the band after the show. We were coming out, the line was in the way, and people from the other side of the auditorium were trying to get in the line but they were walking in front of or against the outgoing folks. I wanted to get an autograph but the crowded area just made me want to get out.
Thanks for a great show. We love jazz.

I attended the concert to stretch my musical knowledge, and because I’d so enjoyed hearing Fleck and Chick Correa at the Phillips several years ago. I was not disappointed! The musicians’ techniques were breathtaking, their arrangements were unique, their interactions with each other and the audience altogether fun and informative. Many sitting around me were newcomers to this group and all thought they were fabulous.

This was without doubt one of the most spectacular performances we’ve attended in Gainesville. The music by Bela and the Flecktones was superb, as expected, but the synergy of the collaboration with the Tuvan throat singers was as moving as it was a surprise. Thank you for bringing them to UF!

This was my first opportunity to see Bela Fleck (I have seen the rest of the Flecktones perform separately), so I was, of course, excited! It was an amazing show, and I loved his totally mod white banjo. This is the first time I have heard “The Twelve Days of Christmas” and enjoyed it. Actually, loved it! My two favorite parts (other than the show itself) were when Bela, in reference to Casey Driessen, said “now we will be joined by the Christmas leprechaun”, and Driessen, indeed, resembled a leprechaun. This leprechaun really rocked the fiddle though. Secondly, Victor Wooten’s solo was amazing, but the set design really made his music pop. The stage screen featured bass clefs floating around in circular patterns. I would like to thank the musical geek who came up with this idea. Music and comedy are a great combination! Thank you, Flecktones, for the fantastic show, and thank you, UF, for bringing them here and only making me pay $10 to see them!

I have to admit that I’d never heard of the band, but a friend of mine surely did. They are such highly creative individuals. The way they created sound from well known, familiar instruments (ok except the Future Man) was mind boggling. I truly enjoyed the whole experience. Their music did not only open our ears, but also expand our mind.

The genre was listed as country/bluegrass. I have never heard country/bluegrass sound like this group.
I am pleased I went to see them even with the misleading description. I would consider their music as eclectic jazz mixed with exposure to other cultural musicians (the throat singers).Fantastic!!!

Another great performance by the Flecktones. Each member is so talented that they could hold a concert on their own. I like the way they share the stage with each other and don’t try to hog the spotlight.
I personally didn’t care much for the Alash performance.

I purchasesd these tickets for my daughter and son-in-law.
They thought the show was great and were very pleased with the seats.

One of the best performances we have seen at the Phillips Center. Skilled artists who were unknown to me, but not my wife. The audience was noticably filled with people who were knowledgeable. A perfect way to spend a sunday afternoon.

This was a truly fabulous concert!! The Flecktones are all superb musicians who continually expand the boundaries…I like to call them “thinking people’s musicians.” Who else could pull of the 12 Days of Christmas in a dozen different keys and time signatures, or play the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies as a bass solo? God bless them, everyone!

For the most part I enjoyed the Bela Fleck concert and the Alash Ensemble. The criticism I have is the overamplification especially on the first selection after the break. It was such that it was uncomfortable. If I had a decible meter, I am sure it would register at or near the danger to hearing level. I have been at Bela Fleck concerts before but it was never this bad. I noticed that since the program attracted a younger than usual audience, many people brought their infant children. This couldn’t have been very healthy for them.

Great “alternative” holiday performance! My husband & I really enjoyed it. Would definitely go to another performance of theirs.

The show was outstanding. I love to do an afternoon show to start off the holidays and this one was right up at the top of my list. After the show they all signed everything we brought with us and chatted with us. I have been to a number of “concerts” at UF and hope a you guys bring us more. GO GATORS!!!!!!

We thoroughly enjoyed Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. The fact that all of the Flecktones were great artists in their own right and were allowed to express their talents, made the performance especially enjoyable.
Also, we very much appreciated the fact that they keep the volume level of their music at a level that did not require ear plugs!

WONDERFUL!!! I’ve seen them before, and this concert was much better than the last. I even bought a CD so I can hear them again and again. I hope they can come back to Gainesville next year.
