Glamour. Romance. Musical Fantasyland…THE OPERA SHOW presents beautiful music exquisitely performed in a spectacular and exuberant 21st century showcase.
Broadway’s Tony Award-winning musical-comedy phenomenon takes you back to 1962 Baltimore, as 16-year-old Tracy Turnblad sets out to dance her way onto TV’s most popular show.
After an exciting debut at the Phillips Center in 2005 and a sold-out performance in 2006, the Soweto Gospel Choir returns to their “U.S. home” once again. The ensemble’s mix of tribal, traditional and popular African gospel makes for a moving, awe-inspiring and unforgettable evening for the entire family.

Did you know…
•
The show is largely inspired by (and is in the style of) Sesame Street: Most of the characters in the show are puppets (operated by actors onstage), the set depicts several tenements on a rundown street in an Outer Borough of New York City, both the live characters and puppet characters sing, and short animated video clips are played as part of the story.
• AVENUE Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is AVENUE Q; still, the neighbors seem nice.
• AVENUE Q opened off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre in March 2003, where it gained rave reviews and was extended four times!
• On September 30, 2004, the day of the first Bush-Kerry presidential debate, on a stage set up in Times Square, the cast of AVENUE Q presented their version of the debate, called AVENUE Q&A, with portrait puppets of Bush and Kerry created by Rick Lyon. Eighteen television networks covered the event. Lyon operated the Bush puppet, while Jennifer Barnhart operated the Kerry puppet. Each puppet sang responses to questions from AVENUE Q’s concerned residents, and then the whole cast sang to the rain-drenched crowds to Vote your heart!

Saw it in NYC last June - this cast had some performers that were even better!
Sound levels for the music were too loud and made some lyrics impossible to hear. The levels may have worked for an empty auditiorium during sound check, but not with a crowd present.
Wonderful show - pre-performance talk with puppeteers was fascinating, but I could have read the reviews Sherwin read myself. A talk dealing with the role of the arts and social issues would have been better.
thanks -

My wife and I completely enjoyed our evening. It was an excellent performance and we look forward to more of the same in the future. Please bring more “Broadway” shows to Gainesville.

What we were able to hear at the performance was clever and funny. Unfortunately either because of our seating (a dead spot?) or because the orchestral accompaniment through the speakers was too strong, we could not catch 80% of the lyrics. We were disappointed and decided to leave because we couldn’t appreciate what was going on. We over heard others saying” I can’t hear the words” so I’m thinking it may have been that the music was too loud. Looked like a great show and I’m sorry that I couldn’t enjoy it.

I saw Avenue Q on Broadway 3 yrs. ago as well as in Gainesville on Nov. 10, 2009. It is unique and extremely creative. My criticism as well as the other 3 persons in our group was that it was difficult to hear the script especially when the audience laughed.

I had known about (and owned the OBC CD from) Avenue Q for a couple of years now. This was the first time I’d seen it live. I loved it. Aside from seemingly being a couple short on cast members, it was great. It especially helped fill in the gaps from the things not mentioned on the CD.
Shame only two nights of the show though, I know a lot more people who would have taken advantage of it had it been shown more.
Good work! Now let’s get Wicked out here!

I had seats that were about 10 rose from the stage and I had to admit that I had a hard time hearing the individuals singing. The others in my party felt the same. I have seen Avenue Q twice before (Broadway and Atlanta Fox) and did not have this problem. There is something unfortunate with the acoustics of the Performing Arts Center.

I was glad to see a show that really appealed to the college crowd. Unusual concept, and lots of fun. Actors and musicians were very talented.
