This 10-member choir from Camagüey was founded in 1994, when the Cuban economy was in peril, food was short and homes and workplaces often lacked electricity. Led by their director Emilia Díaz Chávez, the Creole Choir of Cuba nurtured the music passed down in their families since the early 19th century, gradually adding modern Haitian sounds and reviving old songs. The choir says, “For us music is like food, it feeds the spirit and is a major inspiration for everyday life.”
