Renowned folk singer John McCutcheon is a master of a dozen different traditional instruments, most notably the rare and beautiful hammer dulcimer. His songwriting has been hailed by critics and singers worldwide. With a widespread appeal that knows no boundaries, McCutcheon’s 30 recordings have garnered numerous honors, including seven Grammy nominations. Johnny Cash called McCutcheon, “the most impressive instrumentalist I’ve ever heard.”

Filmed at the famed Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, the Kirov Opera performance features Grammy-winning Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov in the title role. This forceful and evocative production breathes operatic life into the fearsome conqueror. Inspired by the Werner play, Verdi wove a musical tapestry of revenge, courage and freedom, set against the decaying glory of ancient Rome. Celebrated conductor Valery Gergiev brings forth a richly realized performance from the outstanding ensemble.
