Fazil Say, Piano (Cancelled)

Due to circumstances beyond UFPA’s control, Fazil Say has cancelled his piano recital scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013 at University Auditorium. The concert will not be rescheduled for the 2012-13 season.

Ticket refunds are available at point of purchase.

A New Comedy About Love and Marriage

After 15 years of marriage, TV personalities and real-life married couple Annabelle Gurwitch (Dinner and a Movie, Fired!) and Jeff Kahn (The Ben Stiller Show, 40-Year-Old Virgin) have adapted their hilarious memoir, YOU SAY TOMATO, I SAY SHUT UP! for the stage. This 80-minute tour de force offers a hilarious glimpse into a relationship seemingly doomed by opposing personalities from the start. The couple’s delightfully crazy lifestyle manages to keep their relationship intact, up-ending every idea you ever had about living “happily ever after.” The book was developed through sold-out performances at The Comedy Central Theater and at Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles and made its New York premiere at The 2009 New York Comedy Festival.

The production delves into the majesty and savagery of water, a fundamental force in our lives, as seven dancers plunge into an ocean, wrestle a raging tide and slide on an avalanche to a frozen landscape of arctic beauty. SPECTICAST: Franz Lehar’s Die Lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow)

Presented at the Semperoper Dresden by the Sächsische Staatsoper, this updated, contemporary production of the charming, sensual operetta features a stellar cast under conductor Manfred Honeck and French stage director Jérôme Savary. Commonly referred to as the “The Queen of Operettas,” Die Lustige Witwe centers on a wealthy widow and her countrymen’s efforts to match her with the right husband to keep her riches in the principality. With familiar music including You’ll Find Me at Maxim’s and The Merry Widow Waltz, this energetic, humorous staging bursts with color and sensuality.

MOMIX – Botanica

MOMIX returns to the Phillips Center to present Botanica, a production displaying dance at its most organic and inventive. With costumes, projections, custom-made props, puppetry and a score ranging from birdsong to Vivaldi, Botanica showcases the endlessly renewable energy of the company’s performers. For 30 years, MOMIX – under the direction of Moses Pendleton – has been celebrated internationally for its ability to conjure up a world of surrealistic images using props, light, shadow, humor and the human body.

Steve Wilson & Wilsonian’s Grain

Hailed by NPR as “one of the finest saxophonists in the business,” Steve Wilson combines his jazz expertise with respected artists to form the group Wilsonian’s Grain. The quartet has been featured on NPR Live from the Kennedy Center and headlined at the 2011 Detroit Jazz Festival. Wilson’s multifaceted artistry is frequently recognized – he was nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association as best alto sax player in 2008, and for best soprano sax player in 2010. He also serves on the faculties at Juilliard, the Manhattan School of Music and the SUNY Purchase College Conservatory of Music.

UFPA Gala: Big Fun on the Bayou

University of Florida Performing Arts hosts its annual Fundraising Gala – Big Fun on the Bayou – from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Phillips Center.

The annual event is UFPA’s largest fundraiser of the year and helps fund all of its programs, including outreach. Signature cocktails and a gourmet dinner will be provided by Blue Water Bay, and decorations will be supplied by Keith Watson Productions. Music, dancing, a silent auction and much more will make for a memorable evening with a Bayou theme.

Vilde Frang, Violin; Michail Lifits, Piano

Recognized for her outstanding musical expression and virtuosity, Vilde Frang is steadily climbing the ranks as one of the leading violinists of her generation. Her concerto debut as EMI Classics’ Young Artist of the Year 2010 garnered critical acclaim, and she received the Edison Klassiek Award, a Classic BRIT Award for best newcomer and was named 2011’s newcomer of the year at the 2011 ECHO Klassik Awards. Frang’s last recital recording was named “Editor’s Choice” by Classic FM and Diapason magazines. For this performance, Frang will be joined by pianist Michail Lifits, winner of the 57th Ferruccio International Piano Competition.
